1. Write First, Research Later

When you’re starting a new project, it’s tempting to spend time researching. However, you won’t know what facts you need, until you’re in the middle of writing, and often not until you’ve completed an initial draft.

Therefore, write your first draft without giving any thought to what you don’t know.

I use free writing to get down a first draft as quickly as I can. If I need to research something, I’ll put a note right in the draft, in brackets, or I’ll type ‘XXX’.

Writing a draft before researching helps to eliminate procrastination.”

Here’s a tip I left out: Only writing is writing. Thinking about writing isn’t writing. Nor is reading your email, responding to clients, or surfing the web. COUNT the words you write everyday. Just keeping a word count makes a difference.

For example, Stan’s a new writer and a Sell Your Writing Online NOW (SYWON) subscriber.

Stan’s on Lesson 8, and for a beginner, he’s doing brilliantly. He’s written articles for two clients, and has two testimonials. Now’s the time for Stan to spread his wings, and to promote his article writing services by creating a marketing plan for his article writing.

A marketing plan takes a minute or two to create. Then all you need to do is to slot the tasks into your calendar program, and work on each day’s task as the day arrives.

Stan’s still working a day job, so he asked me to help him to create his plan, and to schedule the tasks. He’s now done that. Here’s what he wrote: “I can’t believe it — four days after creating my plan, I’ve got FIVE new clients and projects.”

The first reason is that press releases will get you known as a writer. Every release you write will get new clients for you and will remind current and previous clients that you’re still in business. The second reason is that once you become familiar with writing press releases, you can write them for others: it’s another writing service you can provide to your clients.

1. What’s a Press Release?

Essentially a press release is simply a document which is released to the media about something which is newsworthy. Did you know that 75 per cent of all newspaper articles are derived from press releases? New stories are often based on press releases and in some smaller newspapers may be used as news stories completely as written, in their entirety.

2. Topics for Press Releases

Although the terms “news release” and “press release” can be used interchangeably I usually use “news release” because it reminds me that a press release must contain something newsworthy.

Here’s a list of the elements of a news release. Your news releases should contain at least one of the following elements: timeliness, public interest, conflict, tragedy, humor, sex, money, human interest, the future, or animals.

As a writer this gives you a wide field for topics for your news releases. As a marketing tool for your writing, almost anything can provide a topic for a press release.

For example, if you’re adding a new writing service (such as a news release writing service for example) to the services you provide, this is a great topic for a press release.

Winning a new contract, a client’s success, business tips, and expanding your writing business are all great topics for press releases too.

Almost anything can make a topic for a press release.

Get a press release template so you know the format for your releases, and remember that all press releases are written in the third person — “Jenny Smith, a local writer says_______”.

3. Distributing Your Press Release

Your press releases should always be sent to your local media: that is to local newspapers,radio stations, and TV networks.

The web has opened a whole new arena for press releases. Nowadays many press releases are simply written as an online marketing strategy. They’re written to attract a business’s customers, and provide high-quality links, rather than being directed at the media.

Press releases get credibility, publicity and clients for your writing business. If the media pick up on any of your releases you’ll get a story in your local paper. This happens often.

So write a press release today; it’s an easy and powerful way to market your writing services business.

I’ve got several hundred sites and I know writers who have 1000 sites. This perhaps seems incredible. If you’re a new writer, or you’re not used to Web writing, you’re thinking “why would anybody want that many sites”?

There are a couple of reasons. The first reason is the creating websites is FUN. If you enjoy writing, creating websites gives you an open canvas. You can create a site on any topic at all. You don’t need anybody’s permission, there’s nobody who can reject you, and with any luck at all each and every one of your sites will make money.

How much money?

That depends on the site. Isabel, a writer friend, creates very small sites. Each site has around 10 pages. She’s not looking for a big payday from these small sites, she’s looking for a small amount of money: anywhere from $5-$10 a day from each site. No, that’s not very much money, but on the other hand since she has 200 sites all making five dollars a day, that’s $365,000 a year. This is more money than she could make at a day job, and it’s way more money than she was making writing for magazines.

The point is that there’re no limits to how much money you can make as a writer online when you create websites.

Some writers making thousands of dollars a day. This isn’t hyperbole. It’s very doable for anyone who wants to do it.

YOU could do it, when you understand how the online world works and how the sites you create make money. Approximately 50% of making money by writing websites is knowing how to write, and the other 50% is knowing how to make money from your sites.

Here are four essentials for profitable marketing.

1. The More Marketing You Do, the Better: Everything Is Cumulative

Marketing your writing services business isn’t a “do it once and forget it” thing. It needs to be constant. There’s a reason companies big and small advertise — it’s to get and keep clients.

Once you’ve completed a project for a client, even if the client loves the work you did, there’s no guarantee that he will recall your name six months or two years from now when he’s looking for a writer.

Therefore, you need to market consistently, not only to attract new clients, but also to stay in touch with current and former clients.

I market every day, and so does every other professional writer who’s booked solid. Marketing is a must, and it’s cumulative.

2. Enjoying Marketing: Make It Fun

I hated marketing my writing services for many years, until I realized that if I could market for others, I could do it for myself. The key was ensuring that I only did the kinds of marketing I enjoyed.

You can do this too. Choose one marketing method a month, and do it for the entire month, but make it something that’s fun for you. Blogging and social media marketing are fun for me, so I often choose these forms of marketing. You may prefer advertising or creating press campaigns.

3. The Four Ps of Marketing, Applied to Your Business

When you say “marketing” many writers assume that that means “promotion.” While that’s true, there’s more to marketing than promotion. Use all the basics of the marketing mix, the “4Ps” of Product, Price, Promotion and Place, in your marketing.

That is, think about the products you provide (offer services your buyers need and want), assess your pricing periodically, and target different locations with your products.

4. Be Your Own R&D Department

Large companies have Research and Development (R&D) departments, and you should too. Don’t get stuck in a rut. Study new forms of writing, and develop new writing services you can offer.

When you spend time researching what buyers of your writing need, and then develop services and products to meet those needs, you’ll never run out of marketing opportunities.

In 1985 in New York City, I was lucky enough to take a self development course for writers with Lawrence Block, “Writing for Your Life”, which included some hypnosis techniques. Over the years, that course has helped me to become a much more confident writer; I’ve used hypnosis ever since.

Here are three hypnosis tips which will help you to clear your writing blocks.

1. Define Your Writing Goals: You Must Know What You Want

Start by defining your writing goals. I like to create “process” goals, as well as achievement goals. A process goal is completely under your control. For example, “I will write 2000 words a day” is a process goal, whereas “I will sell my novel by December 31, 2009″ is an achievement goal.

Ensure that your goals are SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely).

Once you’ve defined your goals, you can use hypnosis to achieve them.

2. Use Hypnosis to Help You to Achieve Your Goals

Hypnosis is simply suggestion. We’re all flooded with suggestions every day — all advertising is suggestion for example. The biggest benefit of hypnosis is that you become aware of how much suggestion impacts your life. Then, you can create your own suggestions to counteract these everyday suggestions.

All suggestions are powerful, but they have the greatest effect when you’re a child. There’s no need to rummage through your past however, you can see the results suggestions have had on you — just look around you. Early suggestions formed your beliefs, and your beliefs trigger your actions.

When you learn self hypnosis, you can create your own powerful suggestions which will change your beliefs. Wouldn’t you love to believe that writing is easy and fun for you? You can suggest anything you like to yourself during self hypnosis, and your beliefs will change.

3. Learn Self Hypnosis: It’s Useful in All Areas of Your Life

Self hypnosis is useful in all areas of your life, not just in your writing, so it’s a skill which is well worth learning.

If you’re not familiar with hypnosis, you have many questions. Hypnosis is simply a skill; it’s something you can learn, and then something you do. You don’t have to “believe” in hypnosis to clear your writing blocks effectively, any more than you have to “believe” in jogging to get fit.

It’s possible to learn self hypnosis from a CD, but for best results, have at least one session with a qualified hypnotherapist. You need to know how it feels to be hypnotized — once you’ve experienced the hypnosis mind state, you can practice until you become skilled at self hypnosis.

Hypnosis helps you to manage your mind, your emotions, and your life. Take the time to learn self hypnosis. Not only can you clear your writing blocks, but you can become the writer you were born to be.

Here are some tips to turn you into a bidding dynamo.

1. Give a Detailed Proposal After You’ve Communicated With the Buyer

Avoid making your bid proposals too detailed until you’ve communicated with the buyer. Some “buyers” are just lookers, rather than serious buyers of your writing. Write a short proposal, asking the buyer to contact you for the details.

Once you’ve made sure that the buyer is legitimate, give a more detailed proposal, but not too detailed. It’s an unfortunate fact of life that some unscrupulous buyers will take the scope you’ve written, and hand it to a cheaper writer.

2. Quote a Project Rate

Rather than quoting an hourly rate, give a range. For example, if you’re bidding on an ebook, you might quote a range of $1500-$3000, depending on how much research is required. The lower end of the range would apply if the buyer supplies your research material.

(If you’re a fast writer, you can always make more money when you bid with the project fee rather than an hourly rate.)

If you are totally new to bidding on projects, however, you must bid via hourly rates until you get a sense of how quickly you can write certain types of projects. For example if you’re an experienced writer, you should be able to write at least two Web articles within an hour. When you’re new, you’ll take longer, and this is fine. Practice makes you faster; your speed will increase with time.

3. Ask Questions

Asking questions will help you to tailor your bid. I once had the unfortunate experience of quoting a fee for a writing job without reading the project brief with complete attention. I ended up doing three times the amount of work I’d expected to do; my income was shot for that week.

Never feel you’re being silly when you ask for a clarification. Your buyer wants you to do a good job, and you can only do a good job when you have complete information.

4. Once a Client Has Accepted Your Bid, It’s Time to Negotiate

Unfortunately some clients have a habit of loading extras onto you once they’ve accepted your bid, so make sure that you charge for any extras. If however you feel that client is being unreasonable and is trying to take advantage of you, you can always politely back out of the project.

5. Ignore the Other Bidders

It’s fatal to assume that just because everybody else bids low for project, that the lowest bidder will win. This is rarely the case. Always bid a project rate that you are comfortable with, you’ll be surprised at how many bids you win. Genuine buyers want good, reliable writers because they know that the “cheap” writers will cost them money because they either won’t complete the project, or the work will be sub-standard.

If you’re looking for writing jobs, the outsourcing sites are your happy hunting ground. Turn yourself into a bidding dynamo, and you’ll land all the writing jobs you can handle.
