Web Content Creation: Repurpose Content You Already Have

This is the first post in our “Super Simple Web Content Creation Tips” series, so let’s get started with something very simple — using what you already have.
Chances are you have lots of material you could repurpose as Web content, such as:
* Email messages and forum responses;
* Frequently Asked Questions material you have on your site, or which you regularly send out to customers;
* Internal documents;
* Customer support material;
* Reports.
Email messages: a content bonanza
I often consult on content, and the first thing I suggest when a client claims that they have nothing they can use is that they check their email. Everyone writes email messages, and those email messages usually belong to you. (I say “usually” because they don’t, if you’re an employee.)
Take a break for a moment, and check the email messages you’ve sent over the past two days. I just did that, and I have at least ten messages which could be repurposed as Web content. Some of them SHOULD be repurposed, because they’re responses to questions from students and clients which come up over and over again.
If you’re a member of an online forum, the messages you post are also your property (check with each specific forum, to make sure of what their rules are), so if you visit forums, copy your messages and responses, because you can easily repurpose them.
Frequently Asked Questions — on your site, and elsewhere
I have a Web writing FAQ on my SYWON site. I could easily repurpose that for this blog.
If you don’t have a formal FAQ anywhere, go back to your email messages again. The same questions tend to come up, so make a list of them, and there you go — content you can easily repurpose.
Internal documents: everything from meeting notes to marketing collateral
Everyone creates documents every day, and many of these can be repurposed. For example, the mind map above is just a screen grab out of a Curio document I created for this series.
You can repurpose lots of material as Web content. Make the most of what you have. Consider doing a content inventory. If your business creates a lot of marketing collateral for example, you can repurpose some of it as Web content.
Customer support
Posting this material online saves time and energy.
Reports
Check reports and white papers you’ve created. Some of these can be repurposed, too.
BIG tip: every piece of content must have a goal
This post focuses on finding content which you can repurpose. I’m not suggesting that you should shovel material online just for the sake of it. Every item needs to work hard for you: it must have a goal. We’ll talk about content goals in a future post.

Top ten tips to help you to write fast
The more you write, the more you earn.
I posted this to my writing blog, and I’m sure you’ll find the tips useful. Angela Booth’s Writing Blog: Top Ten Tips to Help You to Write Fast:
“Do you want to write fast and well? The ability to convey your ideas quickly and easily will help you in everything you want to do, so it’s a skill that’s well worth developing.
Writing speed develops with practice, however there are tricks which will help you.
Here are ten of my favorite tricks, developed over 30 years of writing.
1. Write First, Research Later
When you’re starting a new project, it’s tempting to spend time researching. However, you won’t know what facts you need, until you’re in the middle of writing, and often not until you’ve completed an initial draft.
Therefore, write your first draft without giving any thought to what you don’t know.
I use free writing to get down a first draft as quickly as I can. If I need to research something, I’ll put a note right in the draft, in brackets, or I’ll type ‘XXX’.
Writing a draft before researching helps to eliminate procrastination.”
Here’s a tip I left out: Only writing is writing. Thinking about writing isn’t writing. Nor is reading your email, responding to clients, or surfing the web. COUNT the words you write everyday. Just keeping a word count makes a difference.

Writing Jobs Anyone Can Do: Write Articles
There’s never been a better time to be a writer. Your potential income is unlimited. This is simply because as the recession bites, businesses are forced to make alterations to the way they market their products.
I’m amazed at the number of small businesses which are moving the bulk of their operations online, as well as by the number of small businesses which are starting up with the sole aim of selling products online — even a year ago this would’ve been looked on as a risky strategy.
With businesses placing such a high emphasis on selling online, it gives great opportunities for writers. You’re in high demand. Even beginning writers can get writing jobs writing articles.
Can YOU write Web articles?
If you have any writing skills at all, you can write articles. Web articles are very different from articles written for print publications, and they’re much easier to write.
If you read Web articles, you’ll discover that they have certain attributes. They’re easy to read, they’re relatively short when compared to print articles, and they contain links.
So if you’re in the same position as a lot of people, and need to earn extra money, consider writing web articles.

What’s the secret to writing success? Two words: marketing plans.
I create marketing plans for different products each month. For example, one of my marketing plans for April is to promote Fab Freelance Writing Ezine.
Why create marketing plans?

2. They stop procrastination
3. They allow you to track what’s happening with your writing.
