Keyword-Rich Domains: Happy Days, or Disaster?

without comments

domains.jpg

Everyone wants traffic. And not just traffic, they want CHEAP traffic.

This is why you’ll see a lot of advice encouraging you to opt for “keyword-rich” domains. The idea is that you’ll find a low-competition keyword and will snatch it up as a domain name with a scream of triumph and joy.

You’ve just won thousands of dollars worth of traffic for the price of a domain name — $10…

But have you?

Consider that the keyword-rich domain name may get lots of traffic, but few conversions (buyers for whatever you’re selling.)

The keyword may also shrivel and die, as your customers start using different search terms.

You may also have a tendency to relax, thinking that you’ll get traffic for nothing. As the saying goes, there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

Even with a keyword-rich domain, you’ll still need to promote.

So don’t sweat domain names.

Read Why Exact Match Domains Are Not As Important as Many SEOs Believe | SEO Book.com which has an excellent take on your domain-name options. As the article says, when you’re buying a domain name:

“It is basically a choice of short-term vs long-term goals:

* do you want to pick a specific keyword & try to sell something relevant today (with less flexibility going forward)

* do you have the assets available to build a brand that will remain flexible under changing market conditions?”

The market is always changing. When it comes to a domain name, if I have a choice between a “keyword” domain, and a name which precisely targets a market, I’ll choose the latter every time.

Web Content Creation: Repurpose Content You Already Have

without comments

contentrep.jpg

This is the first post in our “Super Simple Web Content Creation Tips” series, so let’s get started with something very simple — using what you already have.

Chances are you have lots of material you could repurpose as Web content, such as:

* Email messages and forum responses;

* Frequently Asked Questions material you have on your site, or which you regularly send out to customers;

* Internal documents;

* Customer support material;

* Reports.

Email messages: a content bonanza

I often consult on content, and the first thing I suggest when a client claims that they have nothing they can use is that they check their email. Everyone writes email messages, and those email messages usually belong to you. (I say “usually” because they don’t, if you’re an employee.)

Take a break for a moment, and check the email messages you’ve sent over the past two days. I just did that, and I have at least ten messages which could be repurposed as Web content. Some of them SHOULD be repurposed, because they’re responses to questions from students and clients which come up over and over again.

If you’re a member of an online forum, the messages you post are also your property (check with each specific forum, to make sure of what their rules are), so if you visit forums, copy your messages and responses, because you can easily repurpose them.

Frequently Asked Questions — on your site, and elsewhere

I have a Web writing FAQ on my SYWON site. I could easily repurpose that for this blog.

If you don’t have a formal FAQ anywhere, go back to your email messages again. The same questions tend to come up, so make a list of them, and there you go — content you can easily repurpose.

Internal documents: everything from meeting notes to marketing collateral

Everyone creates documents every day, and many of these can be repurposed. For example, the mind map above is just a screen grab out of a Curio document I created for this series.

You can repurpose lots of material as Web content. Make the most of what you have. Consider doing a content inventory. If your business creates a lot of marketing collateral for example, you can repurpose some of it as Web content.

Customer support

Posting this material online saves time and energy.

Reports

Check reports and white papers you’ve created. Some of these can be repurposed, too.

BIG tip: every piece of content must have a goal

This post focuses on finding content which you can repurpose. I’m not suggesting that you should shovel material online just for the sake of it. Every item needs to work hard for you: it must have a goal. We’ll talk about content goals in a future post.
