I sent out a message to my Fab Freelance Writing Ezine this morning, sharing one time management secret. I’d like to share it with you, too.

Here’s one simple secret to finding time to write, and much more: visualization.

Visualization: the secret to regularly “seeing” the successful completion of all your tasks and projects

Without the ability to visualize, you wouldn’t achieve anything; you wouldn’t even get out of bed in the morning. We all visualize, every moment of every day. When you realize this, you begin to realize just how effective visualization can be in all areas of your life. Basically, visualizing is just thinking – imagining what you want, rather than what you don’t want.

Do you doubt that you visualize constantly?

Let’s see. Think about lunch. What do you “see”? You’ll see or feel something.

You may not see a picture of your favorite coffee shop; some people don’t visualize in image form: they get a feeling, or hear the noise of the coffee machine hissing, and hear people chatting – so don’t imagine that you can’t visualize, because you can’t get a clear image in your mind. Whichever way (images in your mind, sounds, feelings) visualization works for you is the right way.

Now think about “no time to write”? What are you visualizing now? You may see yourself rushing around, perhaps you’re arguing with your partner because you can’t find time to do things together, or you’re picturing the morning rush, when you’re trying to get the family fed and out the door.

Now think about “plenty of time”… Remember, whatever you “see” when you hear these words is fine. You may see yourself lounging around the hotel pool on vacation, or having breakfast in bed on a Sunday morning.

1. Write First, Research Later

When you’re starting a new project, it’s tempting to spend time researching. However, you won’t know what facts you need, until you’re in the middle of writing, and often not until you’ve completed an initial draft.

Therefore, write your first draft without giving any thought to what you don’t know.

I use free writing to get down a first draft as quickly as I can. If I need to research something, I’ll put a note right in the draft, in brackets, or I’ll type ‘XXX’.

Writing a draft before researching helps to eliminate procrastination.”

Here’s a tip I left out: Only writing is writing. Thinking about writing isn’t writing. Nor is reading your email, responding to clients, or surfing the web. COUNT the words you write everyday. Just keeping a word count makes a difference.

I don’t use Squidoo as much as I should, and that’s only because I don’t have enough time; I always seem to be working on one of my sites, or creating a new product.

One of the debating points in the Squidoo community is: should you have one account, or many?

I’m in the one account camp, chiefly because I don’t have hundreds of lenses. If you do get around 200 or more lenses, I can see where additional accounts would make sense.

Captain Squid, in “When Are Multiple Squidoo Accounts Useful?” says:

…you are seriously diluting a lot of the power you can get from having a unified account.

From the dashboard, lens labels are spectacular for handling different sections of lenses or groups. I have labels for both verticals or themes as well as by aff. network or marketing strategy. Multiple accounts make tracking this stuff a total pain.

I agree. Unless you spend all your time in Squidoo, there’s no point in having more than one account. However, to each his/ her own. It may work for you.

I’ve got several hundred sites and I know writers who have 1000 sites. This perhaps seems incredible. If you’re a new writer, or you’re not used to Web writing, you’re thinking “why would anybody want that many sites”?

There are a couple of reasons. The first reason is the creating websites is FUN. If you enjoy writing, creating websites gives you an open canvas. You can create a site on any topic at all. You don’t need anybody’s permission, there’s nobody who can reject you, and with any luck at all each and every one of your sites will make money.

How much money?

That depends on the site. Isabel, a writer friend, creates very small sites. Each site has around 10 pages. She’s not looking for a big payday from these small sites, she’s looking for a small amount of money: anywhere from $5-$10 a day from each site. No, that’s not very much money, but on the other hand since she has 200 sites all making five dollars a day, that’s $365,000 a year. This is more money than she could make at a day job, and it’s way more money than she was making writing for magazines.

The point is that there’re no limits to how much money you can make as a writer online when you create websites.

Some writers making thousands of dollars a day. This isn’t hyperbole. It’s very doable for anyone who wants to do it.

YOU could do it, when you understand how the online world works and how the sites you create make money. Approximately 50% of making money by writing websites is knowing how to write, and the other 50% is knowing how to make money from your sites.

I’m often asked by subscribers: “What kind of site should I set up first?”

I always advise them to set up their “name” site first. Your name site is the site which has your own name as the domain. For example, my name site is angelabooth.com.

Once you’ve set up your name site, you can set up other sites to make money.

Many of my sites, especially many writing-niche sites (like this site), tend to have lots of content. I also have lots of review sites, in many niches.

Here’s what “Choosing A Topic For A Website” says about review sites:

Review Sites – Review sites are great because all you have to do is review different products and/or services. You can review anything and still make money. You could review cell phones, credit cards, insurance companies, digital cameras, baby products, home and/or garden products, office supplies, books, movies, bedding, clothes, food, or virtually anything else that someone would have an opinion on.

Review sites have many benefits:

* They’re small — usually from three to six pages;

* Because they’re small, they’re fast to set up (think minutes, rather than days)

* They can be highly profitable.

So, get started — set up your first site, and then set up another one. Every site you create is another way for you to boost your income. Enjoy the process: I love creating sites, and once you get into the swing of it, you will too.

Here are some tips to turn you into a bidding dynamo.

1. Give a Detailed Proposal After You’ve Communicated With the Buyer

Avoid making your bid proposals too detailed until you’ve communicated with the buyer. Some “buyers” are just lookers, rather than serious buyers of your writing. Write a short proposal, asking the buyer to contact you for the details.

Once you’ve made sure that the buyer is legitimate, give a more detailed proposal, but not too detailed. It’s an unfortunate fact of life that some unscrupulous buyers will take the scope you’ve written, and hand it to a cheaper writer.

2. Quote a Project Rate

Rather than quoting an hourly rate, give a range. For example, if you’re bidding on an ebook, you might quote a range of $1500-$3000, depending on how much research is required. The lower end of the range would apply if the buyer supplies your research material.

(If you’re a fast writer, you can always make more money when you bid with the project fee rather than an hourly rate.)

If you are totally new to bidding on projects, however, you must bid via hourly rates until you get a sense of how quickly you can write certain types of projects. For example if you’re an experienced writer, you should be able to write at least two Web articles within an hour. When you’re new, you’ll take longer, and this is fine. Practice makes you faster; your speed will increase with time.

3. Ask Questions

Asking questions will help you to tailor your bid. I once had the unfortunate experience of quoting a fee for a writing job without reading the project brief with complete attention. I ended up doing three times the amount of work I’d expected to do; my income was shot for that week.

Never feel you’re being silly when you ask for a clarification. Your buyer wants you to do a good job, and you can only do a good job when you have complete information.

4. Once a Client Has Accepted Your Bid, It’s Time to Negotiate

Unfortunately some clients have a habit of loading extras onto you once they’ve accepted your bid, so make sure that you charge for any extras. If however you feel that client is being unreasonable and is trying to take advantage of you, you can always politely back out of the project.

5. Ignore the Other Bidders

It’s fatal to assume that just because everybody else bids low for project, that the lowest bidder will win. This is rarely the case. Always bid a project rate that you are comfortable with, you’ll be surprised at how many bids you win. Genuine buyers want good, reliable writers because they know that the “cheap” writers will cost them money because they either won’t complete the project, or the work will be sub-standard.

If you’re looking for writing jobs, the outsourcing sites are your happy hunting ground. Turn yourself into a bidding dynamo, and you’ll land all the writing jobs you can handle.
